Vincent Paris, Syrah 2019

Syrah|Rhône Valley, France

Grown throughout the world, Syrah is a shape-shifting grape, able to reflect the subtlety and grace of Pinot Noir, combined with the heft and weight of Cabernet Sauvignon. In the Rhône valley it's arguably more at home than anywhere.

Vincent "Vinny" Paris, a multi-generational Cornas native, possesses some of the finest plots in the region. And he's from a some serious wine lineage; his uncle is the famed Robert Michel, a Rhône rockstar if ever there was one. This is Vinny's affordable, distinguished Syrah from select plots in the Collines Rhodaniennes from his across his holdings in the northern Rhône.

Collines Rhodaniennes, long the sommelier's go-to source for outsized value in the Rhône, is a region encompassing essentially the northern stretch of the Rhône river valley. This is where you'll find the notable appellations of Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, and the like. Paris's vineyards are in some of the finest areas, embodying both the firm, minerally granite soils as well as classic limestone and sand. The vineyards all hug the slope at vertigo-inducing grades and are biodynamically farmed. No chemicals, no machines: a natural, handmade, true labor of love.

As with all his wines, this is cool-climate Syrah at its very best. The first glass explodes with blue fruit and purple flower aromatics, and only gets better into the second day. A fleshy, bright, minty fruit profile is accented by subtle notes of grilled meat, blueberries, and a hint of cracked pepper, with beautiful aromatic lift, and a minty fresh finish. This is textbook Rhône Syrah that massively overdelivers for the price.
