Viña Valoria Rioja Gran Reserva 2006
A very limited, very special Gran Reserva from one of the oldest, most revered estates in Rioja!
Bodegas Valoria was founded in 1860, some 66 years before Rioja was formally recognized as a denominación, making it the fifth oldest estate in the appellation and a guardian of tradition.
Their 2006 Gran Reserva is 100% Tempranillo and a sumptuous oenophile's delight. Savory green herbs, baker's cocoa, dried blackberry, strawberry jam, and sweet spice fill the nose. At a decade-and-a-half maturity it's hitting on all cylinders in the classic, burnished Rioja style. Smooth and savory, with woodsy aromatics, suave fruit texture, and silky tannins that glide across the palate. Decant for at least an hour for full sensory pleasure.
Continuously inhabited since at least the 2nd century B.C., Rioja has a deep, long-lived culture of food and drink; its wines were so well-respected as far back as 1560 that the local government took steps to protect its borders and forbade grapes from outside the region.
As you may know, a "Gran Reserva" by law must be aged the longest of any wine in Spain, for a total of five years minimum, two of which in oak. Valoria's Gran Reserva spent an amazing three years in oak and held back at the estate until just recently. You read that correct: this wine is a current release, direct from the importer. It is not a "grey market" or third-party wine – we inspect and guarantee every single bottle.
And remember, don't take chances on older corks – the Durand wine opener is a must for the vintage bottles in your collection. Brilliant.
