Bodegas Veganzone "Viejo Mundo" Ribera del Duero Crianza 2015
Tempranillo｜Ribera del Duero, Spain
Ribera del Duero, one of the most prestigious regions in Spain. As the name implies it's located on the riverbanks of the Duero river, the same majestic river that flows west through Portugal into the Atlantic, where it's known as the Douro. At over 2700 feet above sea level, this is a land of extremes; it's not uncommon to see swings in temperature of 50+ degrees from day to night. Combined with extremely old, gnarly Tempranillo vines you get wines with extract, distinct terroir, and juiciness – an all-around pleasurable drinking experience at multitude of price points.
Bodegas Veganzone's "Viejo Mundo" is just that. An affordable juicy everyday pleaser from the versatile Tempranillo. A gorgeous purple color in the glass and a nose that exudes candied plums, licorice, red flowers, cedar, and a dusty, chewy tannin finish. My mind goes towards smoky eggplant baba ghanoush or grilled lamb burgers with garlic and ginger.
"Crianza" is a Spanish wine aging requirement; this Crianza spent 12 months in a blend of old/new barrel, imparting subtle oak influence while preserving Tempranillo's savory and juicy plum fruit. At six years bottle-age this wonderful red is just now coming into its own. Enjoy now, this summer when it's grilling time, and over the next two years. Delightful!
