Vaughn Duffy "Suacci Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2016

Sonoma Coast

Another wonderful production from the Bay Area's own Matt Duffy and Sara Vaughn, at a Prologue-exclusive price. Matt and Sara started the label with little more than a U-Haul and a dream of making wine. A stint at Siduri under the guidance of the Pinot master Adam Lee led to the founding of their eponymous label, and every bottle they produce is an absolute slam-dunk instant classic. We adore their wines!

Fun fact: "Sonoma Coast" is actually one of northern California's largest delimited regions, spanning over 500,000 acres, from the coastline all the way east to the San Pablo Bay, abutting Napa County. It's huge. The Robb Report describes the Sonoma Coast AVA as "a region so diverse as to be almost meaningless to its distinctive parts" – it pays to know your geography with so-called Sonoma Coast wines.

The Suacci vineyard, located just west of Sebastopol, is part of the "true" Sonoma Coast, directly influenced by fierce cooling winds coming off the ocean, dramatically colder and foggier than much of the region to its east. The near-daily sea winds shrivel the berries, making for uber-concentrated, high-acid fruit with extract and nervous tension. Combine that with the famed "Goldridge" soils and the deft hands of the Vaughn Duffy duo and you've got a superb Pinot Noir.

Classic and thoroughbred, the wine shows high-toned and tart wild berry, crunchy raspberry, spiced cherry pie, and rose hips. After a vital decanting, the wine unfolds with cinnamon, clove, and orange peel, with a velvety soft tannin texture from the bottle age.

This superb 2016 vintage goes for as much as $50/bottle elsewhere – we're offering this beautiful Pinot for 35% off, while it lasts!
