Vaughn Duffy, Old River Red 2018

Carignane Blend | North Coast, California

Another wonderful production from the Bay Area's own Matt Duffy and Sara Vaughn.

Matt and Sara started the label with little more than a U-Haul and a dream of making wine. A stint at Siduri under the guidance of the Pinot master Adam Lee led to the founding of their eponymous label, and every bottle they produce is an absolute slam-dunk instant classic. We adore their wines!

Their "Old River Red" is a homage to the classic "field blend" style of California reds, comprised of Carignane, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah. Brisk, fruit-forward, and beautifully aromatic "anytime" red that is ultra satisfying with hearty fare (think glazed ribs off the BBQ!) or enjoyed a capella.

The Carignane comes from the "Bartolomei Brothers" vineyard in Mendocino, one we've featured here before and a stellar site, with its 80-plus tear-old vines or organic Carignane. For the Zinfandel, they look to the "Poor Ranch",  also in Mendocino. Lastly, the Petite Sirah hauls from the Knights Valley AVA in Sonoma, a subregion well known for its focus on deeper-colored grapes like this Petite Sirah.

Vaughn Duffy works with some of the best small vineyards in California, including the three prestigious vineyards featured here. If you've never had their wines before, jump into this fresh, juicy, medium-bodied blend and you'll see why they're one of our favorites in the state!
