Txampian Txakoli Rosé 2020

Hondarrabi Blend|Getaria, Spain

Take a vacation in a bottle with this spritzy, pink-fruit-infused, fun rosé from Spanish Basque country!

Txakoli (pronounded CHOCK-oh-lee) is a wine style made in the Basque country, a fiercely independent and rugged region in northern Spain near southern France, along the Biscay coast.

The producer: Txampian (yep, pronounced "champion") is a fifth-generation producer in Zarautz. Proud, family-run, and sustainable; all of their wines simply sparkle. In a tasting of their wines we were hard-pressed to choose this rosé as a clear favorite, so definitely look for their white Txakoli later this year...yum.

The region: Getariako Txakolina, based around the towns of Zarautz and Getaria, beautiful little fishing villages on the coast in the Bay of Biscay, butting right up against the French border.

The grapes: a blend of Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza, two distinct local varieties you won't see anywhere else in the world.

The wine: so vivacious, simply bursting with pink fruits and flowers, honeydew melon, rosewater, strawberry, pepper, crushed stone, and a bit of "prickle" from the tiny amount of CO2 left in the bottle; the spritziness dances across your tongue. Just delightful!

Pair this with briny pickled things, shellfish, sheep cheese and olives, or just ample sun and some friends. Go camping and pop a bottle over the campfire! Match it up with Alison Roman's potatoes and sardines with dill! This beautiful rosé is your next secret weapon.

The locals call it Txa-txa (cha-cha) for short. Don't overthink it, just grab some to load up for the rest of the season!
