Two Shepherds "Pastoral Rouge" 2013

Rhône Blend|Russian River Valley

Two Shepherds is a wonderful, two-person operation focusing on Rhône varieties from cool climate sites from California's heritage vineyards. The San Francisco Chronicle dubbed them "Rhône-style rockstars in Sonoma County."

Everything is done naturally, the old-fashioned way: grapes are stomped by foot, fermentation occurs spontaneously with no additions, and minimal sulfur is used at bottling.

The "Pastoral Rouge" is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, their flagship red released only when they feel it is ready. At seven years of age, it's showing perfectly now.

Light and ethereal: raspberry candy, red rope licorice, and hibiscus floral notes dominate the nose. On the palate it has that bright red fruit, a touch of smoky meatiness and bright acidity with a whisper of tannins. This is a great addition to your pantry to enjoy immediately – serve it slightly cooler than you would to bring out the floral notes and enjoy with hard cheeses, charcuterie, or on its own as an aperitif.

This is a wine light on its feet and as natural as it comes, made lovingly by two dedicated winemakers out of an intimate space in Sonoma. When you compare it at $30 on the winery's site, this is an incredible deal at $22, while it lasts!
