Tofanelli Family Vineyard Charbono 2015
Charbono｜Calistoga, Napa Valley
Expansive, bold, spicy, voluptuous...these are some of the descriptors used to describe Vince Tofanelli's Charbono.
From the famed Turley Cellars to the 100-point scoring superstar Thomas Rivers Brown, a number of heavy hitters source from Vince Tofanelli's dry-farmed, organic estate in Calistoga.
Vince's grandparents bought the property in 1929, in the height of Prohibition, and managed to hang on to their vines despite decades of political and social upheavals, never wavering from their practice of organic dry-farming – these vines have never been treated with chemicals or seen irrigation. Simply stunning. As the Historical Vineyard Society writes, the Tofanelli vineyard is "one of the last examples of pre-World War II grape growing in the Napa Valley."
Vince's Charbono is opaquely purple and deeply flavored, full of blackberry jam, cigar, cocoa, loads of spice, wood smoke, and crushed violets.
Make no mistake: this wine is as serious and captivating as any Napa Bordeaux blend out there. A piece of Napa Valley history!
