Terre Rouge Syrah "Les Côtes de L'Ouest" 2014

From one of the original 'Rhône Rangers," the famed Bill Easton founded Terre Rouge in 1985, focusing on the Rhône varieties European settlers planted here over a century ago. High up in the Sierra Foothills, in Gold Rush country, the soil is deep-red, volcanic and granite mix, giving the wines an intense minerality, concentration, and dusty tannic bite.

The wine is full and rich, with notes of blueberry pie, leather, black olive, baking spice, dusty earth, and a silky mouthfeel. It's not shy, yet is still balanced. Distinctly Californian, and with six years of age it drinks perfectly now but will easily age for an additional 5+ years.

Natural and organic methods are used throughout: zero chemicals, the estate is solar-powered, natural composts are used as fertilizer, and they integrate holistic practices such as using owls and other natural predators for pest control.

This Syrah seriously overdelivers for $20 – his top-tier bottling "Ascent" recently received a perfect 100 point-score from Wine Enthusiast and trades for $90+/bottle.
