"Las Aves" (the birds) is one of Skylark's flagship blends crafted in the spirit of the red blends of Priorat, Spain, where the Carignane grape reigns supreme.

Co-owners John Lancaster and Rob Perkins are the minds behind Skylark. Besides running the label, they're veteran sommeliers responsible for setting the standard in hospitality across numerous Bay Area restaurants, including Boulevard, one of the most distinguished and iconic restaurants in San Francisco. Rob is now full-time making wine at Skylark while John still, amazingly, runs the wine program at Boulevard – since 1996 and counting!

The 2015 is a blend of old-vine Carignane from the Niemi Vineyard in Redwood Valley, Mendocino with dollops of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to boot, for a classic Cali "field blend." 

Balancing California sunshine and ripeness with an herb-tinged, old world sensibility, this 2015 has just the perfect "bottle age" and shows ripe figs, raspberry, and plum with bay leaf, and thyme, with a beautifully long finish and smooth, integrated tannins woven into the silky fruit profile.

I can confidently say that I wouldn't be where I am today were it not for the example Rob and John set with their combination of gracious warmth, deep knowledge, and an unyielding passion for the hospitality business. And I'm not alone - their camaraderie and steady leadership have molded innumerable careers.
