Sineann "Pear Blossom Vineyard" 2017

Grüner Veltliner|Columbia Gorge, Washington

Founded in 1985, Sineann (pronounced shuh-NAY-uhn) makes refined, small-production wines from the Pacific Northwest, including this vibrant white from the Columbia Gorge region in Washington. The Pear Blossom Vineyard sits at 1200 feet at the base of Underwood Mountain, an extinct volcano; its grapes are all organic and dry-farmed, which may explain the intensity of this Grüner...

Grüner Veltliner is inarguably Austria's flagship variety known for its intense concentration, texture, and singing acidity. From this site, it certainly produces those characteristics and more. It opens immediately with lemon custard, mandarin peel, white flowers, mineral oil, and hazelnut. It's a downright joy to smell.

The palate is suffused with Asian pear, floral perfume, honeyed lemon, and a bone-dry finish buttressed by glorious acid that refreshes and leaves you begging for another sip. We paired this with fried chicken with glorious results, but wager it can accompany nearly any cuisine you pair with it. Pro tip: let the wine come close to room temperature for the aromatics to fully open and the mouthfeel to unfold. It's a wonderful, versatile wine – load up while you can, you'll be converted at the first sip!
