Rocca di Montegrossi, "Geremia" Rosso Toscana 2016

Merlot Blend|Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is an enchanting land, full of Renaissance-era castles, rolling hills, and some of Italy's finest wine. Montegrossi's "Geremia" Bordeaux blend is modeled in the "Super-Tuscan" molds and stands alongside some of the greatest to emerge from Tuscany.

With roots going back to the 7th century, you may recognize Rocca di Montegrossi first and foremost as a producer of fine wine from their breathtaking estate in Monti, part of the Classico area of Chianti (the original, oldest historical center of the region). Their vineyards and olive groves are 100% Certified Organic, and their very limited olio is just as regarded as their award-winning wines.

A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is their flagship Bordeaux blend and a wickedly delicious drink now or in another five years. Aged for 24 months in French barrique, the wine shows plump, forward notes of brambly dark fruit, savory plum, purple flowers, sandalwood, and warm spices. The palate is so long and smooth, showing lovely, rounded tannins that will continue to soften and integrate with the woodsy berry notes and spicebox – they once again show that Bordeaux varietals like Cab Sauv and Merlot rightfully have a noble home in Tuscany. After almost twenty years in the business, this is one of the finest examples of the style I've had on a long while.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous agrees, giving this vintage of Geremia a whopping 96 points, saying "Geremia is one of the most distinctive and unique wines in Chianti Classico. The 2016 is absolutely stellar.”

This much wine at less than $50 is a dream come true. Enjoy!
