Robert Biale "Royal Punishers" Petite Sirah 2018

Napa Valley

Following the mantra of "less is more," Napa natives Robert Biale and David Pramuk are old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah advocates, creating award-winning reds from historic vineyard sites in and around Napa Valley. While their Zins are (rightfully) well-known and respected, they make some rockin' Petite Sirah as well. This "Royal Punishers" Petite Sirah is a knockout.

Boysenberry, currant liqueur, clove, mint, licorice, campfire, bacon, and tobacco...so much going on in the glass! The 2018 vintage in Napa was, thankfully, a cooler one and the reds are shaping up to be simply stunning. Petite Sirah thrived in this harvest and this will surely develop wonderfully over the next 5-10 years.

Biale's history goes back to Prohibition-era Napa; his grandfather Pietro Biale was known to slide his neighbors a jug of "Black Chicken" (code name for Zinfandel) with their groceries.

Petite Sirah has grown in the Napa Valley ever since the first European settlers started to arrive, bring cuttings in their suitcases. It's bold, perfumed, dark and spicy. And be advised: this wine is still a baby. It's wound as tight as a spring and should be decanted for 1-2 hours to let it breathe. It will definitely age for the long haul, too.
