Rivers-Marie, "Summa Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2017

Pinot Noir|Sonoma Coast

It's so unbelievable I have a hard time comprehending the words as they’re written, but we have a parcel of the EPIC, impossible-to-find "Summa" Pinot from Thomas Rivers Brown’s flagship property in the beautiful Sonoma Coast. $120/bottle elsewhere – IF you can find it! Whether as an investment or the cherry in your cellar, this is a no-brainer acquisition every aficionado should jump on!

Longtime readers will recognize the name Thomas Rivers Brown as the mastermind behind too many high-flying projects to mention in one write-up, but a small snapshot includes Schrader, Maybach, Outpost, and Turley. He’s arguably received more 100-point scores than any other Napa winemaker in history. Every wine he makes is an instant classic.

This Pinot comes from Thomas and his wife Genevieve Marie Welsh’s estate vineyard in the Sonoma Coast near the town of Occidental. The property is very near and dear to them; Genevieve actually grew up on the site when it was a vegetable and livestock farm. Their first vintage was in 2002, and still to this day the overwhelming majority of the wines are sold to their private mailing list (which has a years-long wait to join!).

Using our connections, we’ve acquired a small parcel of their epic 2017 direct from the winery at a world-crushing 40% off the next best price you can find anywhere. This is an extremely limited opportunity to stock your cellar with a world-class, highly collectible Pinot. Trust us when we say this is a don’t miss opportunity!

95 points – Jeb Dunnuck

Ample ripe cherries, mulberries, baking spices, and orange blossom notes emerge from the 2017 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard, which comes from a cooler vineyard that’s insight of the Pacific Ocean on a clear day. Aged 10 months in 50% new French oak, it’s one of the more structured wines in the lineup and is medium to full-bodied, with notable tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. (6/2019)

94 points – Robert Parker

The 2017 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1998. The wine aged 10 months in 33% new French oak. It's medium ruby in the glass with notes of woodsmoke, pipe tobacco, clove and cinnamon over wild blackberries, dried black cherries, charcuterie and underbrush, opening ever so slowly to red berry sparks and violet perfume with time in the glass. It's light to medium-bodied, intense and spicy with chalky tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long and layered. This is beautiful now but merits more time in bottle. (EB) (12/2019)

94 points – Vinous Media

The 2017 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard is pliant, supple and engaging. The expression of fruit is more overt than in the Old Vines. Bright red cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal, mint, blood orange and raspberry are all beautifully delineated in this striking, super-expressive Pinot that will be impossible to resist young. Creamy and beautifully textured, the 2017 has so much to offer. It is one of the many highlights in the range.
