Amongst a panoply of different soil types throughout Napa, Coomsbville stands out for its unique, definitive terroir. Millions of years ago the Napa landscape as we know it was subjected to turbulent seismic activity, lava flows, and today’s geology reflects the varied soils dispersed throughout the region. Amidst dozens of different terroirs in any given part of Napa, Perry’s Coombsville property boasts predominantly two soil types: red clay and volcanic tufa.
This singularity contributes a distinct sense of place in these wines, with an iron-inflected, grittier edge and higher acidity for a more restrained style of wine that’s at once classically Napa but exhibiting a great sense of balance.
Richard and Sheila Perry were visionaries in identifying the potential of this estate when they purchased the 20-acre ranch in 1979, planting Cabernet, Syrah, and a small parcel of Viognier. They were primarily farmers for the better part of two decades, selling their pristine fruit to the likes of Stags’ Leap Winery and Dunn. Their inaugural vintage was in 1997 and, sadly, Richard died in a tragic car accident in 2007. Sheila Perry has continued the operation to this day with winemaker Ken Bernards.
Of recent vintages, I can easily say 2014 is one my standout favorites, showing a delicate aromatic finesse and restrained power. This 2014 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from his estate property, showing textbook blackcurrant leaf, cassis, mocha, bay leaf, and warm baking spice. As smooth and rich as befits the finest Napa cabs with polish and definition. Decant for at least an hour to fully appreciate the aroma and fine-grained tannins, or cellar in a cool, dark place for another 3-5 years and witness it continue to evolve with spectacular results.
Make no mistake of the incredible value here – the estate’s immediate neighbors’ wines go for 2-3x this, from the same terroir and grape profiles. Don’t miss this rare chance to stock your cellar with premium Napa Cab for a song!
