Proprietress Margarida Serôdio Borges helms the estate, carrying on a tradition of making wine at Fojo started by her grandfather. This remarkable estate was for years one of the principal sources for the ports from Taylor-Fladgate. (Not all port brands make wine from their own fruit; much of it is bought from smaller estates throughout.)
The "Vinha do Fojo" is a limited-series dry red wine, always made from the same estate vineyards from a commingled blend of old vines of native Portuguese varietals: Tinta Roriz (Portuguese for Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and more.
The wine is made much as it was for centuries before, foot-trodden in the traditional granite troughs known as lagares. In Borges's words, "no practices that manipulate the end result or that separate the wine from its root – the vine." It spent ten months in a blend of new and old French oak barrels, where it developed heady, complex flavors of of savory blackberry, leather, and spice. Rich, luxurious, yet not "hedonistic" or over the top. Oh, and limited – this series was only produced in four recent vintages: 1999, 2000, 2001, and not again until 2013.
