Ployez-Jacquemart, "Granite" Extra Brut Champagne MV
Stop what you're doing and take note of this iconic, transcendent, time-capsule-in-a-bottle Champagne from Ployez Jacquemart, whose blend includes reserve wine from 1976!
It's no secret that the Ployez family produces some of my favorite Champagnes of all time. Since 1930, they've crafted artisanal Champagne in their idyllic hamlet of Ludes. Madame Laurence Ployez runs the show today and is one of the most genuine, warmhearted humans I've ever met.
Her "Granite" bottling is a one-off release celebrating the 90th anniversary of the estate. To appreciate this cuvée, let's delve into what a "Multi-Vintage" (MV) wine is. Multi-vintage Champagne, AKA non-vintage, draws from multiple years of reserve wine stored at the estate, with the intent to showcase a house's particular style and smooth out the ups and downs from vintage to another.
Madame Ployez's "Granite" multi-vintage draws upon a stunning panoply of the best vintages of this century and last, dating back to 1976! It doesn't stop there, though: the blend includes reserve wines from 1982, 1983, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
The blend is 61% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Noir, and 8% Pinot Meunier, from the finest villages, including Cramant and Mesnil-sur-Oger. Bottled with a minuscule 4 grams dosage, it was disgorged in June of 2019 and released in 2020.
Pour this into a wide-mouth glass to appreciate all the beautiful nuance as you allow it to open. It's a deeply flavored wine, with the richness and full body similar to Krug or Bollinger and the taut, mineral edge of Jacquesson. As the wine develops in glass, it reveals citrus and floral notes, smoky hazelnut, exotic quince, bread crust, with laser-like acidity and minerality. Lightness and power; depth and complexity. This is a breathtaking wine.
The Wine Advocate's gushing review calls this rare creation "exquisitely refined and strikingly complex."
Her family's history significantly predates their commercial beginnings. An intricate, centuries-old network of chalk caves, called crayères, lies beneath their estate buried 25 meters below-ground, ideal for aging their cuvées before release. Everything about Ployez Jacquemart is the epitome of boutique, artisanal, and the polar opposite of a "corporate" winery.
