Pietroso, Brunello di Montalcino 2016
Blue-chip Brunello alert!
Pietroso's rosso was one of our most popular Sangiovese offerings last winter. We're proud to debut their fantastic, jaw-dropping gorgeous Brunello from the 2016 vintage – one everyone is raving about – from some of the finest real estate in Montalcino.
I'll let you in on a secret: we're extremely picky about Brunello here and rarely encounter one that just stopped us in our tracks like this 2016 from Pietroso. 2016 is getting even more press than the previous year; it's easy to get lost in the hype, but this is a serious contender for some of the best Brunello I've had in my two-decade career tasting the stuff.
If you drink it now, decant for at least an hour and watch how it uncoils over time. Dark, fragrant, and multifaceted, it shows deep plum skin, warm tilled earth, balsam, figs, smoky rosewater, a hint of mocha, and wild bay leaf with a structured but elegant palate. Silky smooth, with perfectly matched tannins to the raspberry and mint-laced finish. Haunting and delicious with a long life ahead of it, no doubt.
Need more convincing? An array of stellar reviews are starting to pour in, including 98+ points from Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck's Italian reviewer, describing the 2016's "vibrant personality, and for showcasing hallmark traits of the region and style.”
The Pietroso estate is in the north-eastern edge of Montalcino, the ideal zone, just bordering the historic medieval hamlet of Montalcino itself, on its western slopes. These gently curving bowl-shaped vineyards yield generous sunshine, ideal drainage, and are all hand-picked. You won't find more prime real estate in the region.
It will easily cellar for another decade-and-a-half, should you have the patience. In my opinion Pietroso is an under-valued estate, and a wine like this will only continue to appreciate.
