Pierre Gaillard Crozes-Hermitage 2017
Syrah｜Rhône Valley, France
To those uninitiated with Rhône valley Syrah, take note: this is a textbook, as-classic-as-it-gets example one could find.
Crozes-Hermitage is adjacent to the famous hill of Hermitage itself, where Benedictine monks settled centuries before, tending the vineyards and recognizing the unique, powerful wines created from here.
Aromas of blue-black fruit, white pepper, a hint of black olive and leather abound. Zesty acidity and silky natural fruit tannins complement the bright, pure aromatics. Fresh, polished, and focused Syrah at its best. This wine drinks superbly after an hour's decanting but will also reward patient cellaring for the next 3-5 years.
The terroir in Pierre Gaillard's sites is supreme: alluvial river stones, limestone, and steep slopes that bask in the Mediterranean sun, buffeted by the mistral – the fierce wind that blows incessantly through the valley.
For old-school producers such as Gaillard, "natural" is simply the way he's always done things. Only organic products are used in the vineyard. Grapes are pressed into large, old casks for fermentation and bottled with minimal filtration in order to preserve the essence of terroir prevalent here.
Pierre has made wine in the Rhône for nearly forty years, winemaking is all in the family here; his wife Pascale as well as their three children are involved in the running of the estate and are branching out with ventures of their own.
