Pernand-Vergelesses Terroir Pack

Collector's Edition White Burgundy

In our never-ending passion for "terroir" and amazing site-driven wines, we've curated a selection of two glorious white burgundies from the vastly under-appreciated Pernand-Vergelesses appellation.

Pernand-Vergelesses (PEAR-nahn vair-jeh-LESS) is a bucolic medieval hamlet, population 269, tucked behind the famed hill of Corton, just across from the noble Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne vineyard, in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy.

“Pernand” means the “lost source” in the ancient Celt language, referencing the history of Celtish settlers going back millennia, who revered the site for its seclusion and proximity to ancient trading routes connecting southern Europe to northern France. The 12th-century church “Nôtre-Dame de Bonne Espérance” (Our Lady of Good Hope) and its ancient wash houses anchor the village – however evidence of winemaking goes back even further! Since the time of the Celts, the Benedictine monasteries, to today, these parcels of land have been coveted for their distinct terroir.

This limited set of two bottles contains one each of the following:

DOMAINE DUBREUIL-FONTAINE "1ER CRU CLOS BERTHET" PERNAND-VERGELESSES 2014

The mother-and-daughter team of Christine and Clémentine Dubreuil lead this dynastic estate founded by their ancestors in 1879. The premier-cru "Clos Berthet" is their "monopole" – owned and farmed solely by the Dubreuil family for generations. At seven years age this beauty is singing, with vibrant candied Meyer lemon peel, orange oil, and flowery anise notes, buttressed by racy, razor-sharp acidity and a keen sense of minerals. From its fresh aromas and still-vibrant yellow glints in the glass, this wine belies its age in every way and is still evolving beautifully in bottle. You won't find this vintage anywhere else in the world.

DOMAINE MARIUS-DELARCHE "LES BELLES FILLES" PERNAND-VERGELESSES 2018

Etienne Delarche now runs this fine estate, with holdings in Pernand and nearby Corton. This sub-parcel "Les Belles Filles" (the beautiful daughters) faces east by northeast, making it a somewhat cooler site; however in the bountiful 2018 vintage it shows musky notes of lemon blossom, orchard fruits, apples, and a rich lanolin finish. A slight earthy grip frames a subtle, textured, rounder mouthfeel.
