Paul Déthune, Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Brut Champagne MV

Pinot Noir|Champagne, France

We're proud to offer this under-the-radar, boutique grower Champagne from the estate of Déthune. The wines of Paul Déthune have been top of our list for years – their limited bottlings are usually only found in restaurants and wine bars; savvy sommeliers quickly grab all they can upon release. The wines of Déthune were a must on any wine list I curated over the course of my two-decade career as a sommelier.

Their Blend de Noirs is 100% Pinot Noir coming from their organic estate in Ambonnay, the Grand Cru-rated village that's home to the finest Pinot in Champagne. This is luxury Champagne at its finest, showing deep "bass" notes of subtle red fruits (cherry pit and red plum come to mind), with Chinese five-spice, tons of toasty brioche notes, and citrus curd with a long, satisfying finish. This multi-vintage (MV) bottling stunningly also includes reserve wines of up to forty years age in the blend!

The house of Déthune is headed up by wife-and-husband team of Sophie and Pierre Déthune. They're located in the regal hamlet of Ambonnay, one of only 17 villages rated as "Grand Cru" in Champagne, and known for their Pinot-dominant, powerful yet delicate wines. Completely natural and organic farming reigns supreme here, including integrated pest management, solar power, and no chemicals in the vineyard.

To me, their process in the cellar echoes that of Bollinger's, with ferments taking place in oak barrels and aging far longer than the legal minimum for vintage Champagne. The result is a powerful, full-bodied expression of Ambonnay terroir, with golden apple, pear butter, toasty croissant, vetiver, and unmistakeable mineral texture. Just beautiful, complex, mouth-water stuff that drinks beautifully now and will surely only appreciate in bottle with a bit more age.

They farm only their own vines, totaling a scant 7 hectares, making them one of the smallest boutique growers in the market, and only a handful of cases come stateside every year. We're one of the proud few who get access, so revel in this glory whole you can!
