Occhipinti, "Il Frappato" Rosso 2016
Frappato is a rare native Italian grape, known for its gorgeous red-fruit aromas, hints of spice, and a certain wild nature to it. Almost 85% of the entire globe's plantings of Frappato are found in Sicily, near the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna.
This beautifully aged specimen comes to us by way of one of Etna's most talented winemakers, Arianna Occhipinti. She learned her craft at the feet of her uncle, Giusti Occipinti, of COS fame. Since her first vintage some 14 years ago at the age of 24, she's rocketed into the stratosphere as a favorite of fine dining establishments, sommeliers, and geeky wine bars worldwide.
This bottling came direct from the importer's private stash, and shows bright, clear notes blood orange, violets, tart raspberry, and volcanic earth. In her words, it is "bitter, bloody, and elegant." A rare, unique, delicious wine for fans of natural Italian reds.
