Monte Bernardi, "Fiasco!" Chianti 2019 – 1 Liter
Sangiovese Blend｜Tuscany, Italy
Whether it's dinner for six, or just a big fan of Sangiovese, this one-liter bottling of biodynamic Chianti is your Swiss-army knife bottle for any occasion.
The playful label exterior hides some truly serious farming at the estate of Monte Bernardi. Located in the beautiful little village of Panzano in Chianti, they're a family affair founded by Michael Schmelzer, an American expat who bought the property in 2003. From the outset, he farmed the newly-planted vines according to biodynamic principles, using organic herbal preparations, teas, and the lunar calendar.
This is your classic, medium-bodied style, showing all the lifted, pure notes of Sangiovese evinced in the sour cherry, licorice, red flowers, rose petal notes buttressed by a hint of cocoa nib and tilled earth. Snappy, fresh, and super-quaffable, it's a fun yet serious red that is as natural as they come.
In Italian, a fiasco is the iconic straw-bottomed round bottle (flask) from the red-and-white checkered tablecloth era. You might see one to this day in Little Italy with a candle stuck in it listening to Dean Martin croon. During WWII, soldiers fell in love with wine from Chianti in these rounded bottles and spread the word back home. As the region's fame increased, winemakers largely dropped this format in favor of the now standard 750ml bottle. This "Fiasco!" calls back to that era in a light-bodied, fun to drink, easy to please format that happens to be super delicious and as organic as they come.
We love one-liters and Monte Bernardi's wines – you will too!
