Marqués de Murrieta "Castillo Ygay" Rioja Reserva 1996
Marqués de Murrieta is one of the most historic, pathbreaking estates in Spain, not just Rioja! The first wines were produced in 1852, with the estate being settled around the ancient castle and its vineyards some two decades later. Named for the Marquis Luciano de Murrieta, it's still family-owned to this day and is a lodestar for the traditional Riojana style still in practice today.
Year in and year out, the blend is mostly Tempranillo with small amounts of Mazuelo (aka Carignan) and Garnacha.
Their wines are some of the most collected and desired in Rioja; Wine Spectator called this estate the #1 winery in the world in 2020 for good reason! The superb 1996 vintage drinks wonderfully now but is one to continue aging – if you have the patience! Don't forget to use a professional wine opener like The Durand with these older wines.
This wine, as with all our selections, was shipped temperature-controlled and stored in our 58-degree warehouse entirely. Shipping will take place in temp-controlled trucks to the final hub where it will be handed off to the carrier for the last mile. We use ice packs (free of charge!) wherever necessary to protect your wine. We may reserve the right to hold the wine, free of charge, in our climate-controlled warehouse during extreme weather.
Fill level is superb, at mid-neck. Label, cork, and foil are all in excellent condition.
