Marchesi di Grésy "Monte Aribaldo" Dolcetto d'Alba 2018
The di Grésy family comes from a long line of noble farmers in Barbaresco, Piedmont in northwestern Italy as far back as 1797. Their Barbaresco wines are some of the most desired, refined examples in the region today, capable of aging gracefully for decades.
This Dolcetto hails from the single vineyard "Monte Aribaldo" found in the Barbaresco region – if the grape were Nebbiolo instead of Dolcetto it would qualify as Barbaresco, costing easily twice as much. Planting Nebbiolo would be far more profitable but they chose to retain these heritage old vines, perhaps out of sentimentality, but assuredly because of the superb wine they produce.
Full of bitter chocolate notes, Morello cherry, and spicy warm earth with tart, crunchy red cranberry fruit, licorice, and a hint of leather. The wine falls on the fuller side of medium, and simply begs for any red sauce dish or grilled summer peppers.
