Mar de Envero, "Troupe" Rias Baixas 2019

Albariño|Rias Baixas, Spain

Fresh, brisk Albariño, about as classic as it gets, from the beautiful Rias Baixas region in Galicia, northwest Spain!

Mar de Envero is the brainchild of Manyo Morieira, a winemaker since 2007 based in Galicia. This is what’s called “Green Spain,” so named for the verdant, lush landscape in northwest Spain, buffeted by Atlantic winds and the Bay of Biscay. Moreira is also an avid surfer, and sees plenty of parallels between the nearby surf and the impression of crisp salinity in the granite-laden soils of Rias Baixas.

Classic Albariño through-and-through: peachy, white flower scents waft from the glass along with yellow nectarine, jasmine, and echoes of flinty-salty minerals. Fresh and crisp, minerals, tangy acidity and delicate pit fruits equal a deliciously dry, easy-drinking, artisanal Albariño!

The vines are farmed sustainably, which honestly doesn’t do justice to his commitment to natural winemaking – he doesn’t use any nasty chemicals and uses minimal implements only when  absolutely necessary.

While some producers try to get fancy, using barrel fermentation, longer aging, or extended lees contact, Moreira focuses on what makes these types of wines so delicious and classic: The Albariño is destemmed, briefly macerated to extract all that grape-y goodness from the skins, then fermented in stainless steel to preserve the fresh aromatics and imprint from the sea that makes Rias Baixas so delicious and easy-drinking.  A “patio pounder” to be sure, this beautiful little white goes down all too easy.
