Maçanita Touriga Nacional Rosé 2018

Touriga Nacional|Douro, Portugal

Rosé isn't just for summer, especially this beauty – with its fresh acidity, vibrant ruby-tinted fruit and fleshy body, this is a perfect "bridge" wine to hold up to bolder foods than white wine would. And personally, I find these hearty types of rosé immensely satisfying with grilled salmon, Thai curry, or any of those other "curve ball" pairings.

Joana Maçanita crafts this aromatic rosé from high-altitude vineyards in the Douro, the same region famous for its strapping Ports. Touriga Naçional is the variety – one of Portugal's proudest – and, when in red form, makes deeply colored, full flavored reds with power, extract, and tannin.

Along with her brother António, she meticulously sources fruit for her wines by literally walking the steep, terraced vineyards hugging the Douro in search of sites that "click." Here, she's created simply a gorgeous wine: sour cherry-inflected fruit and rosewater lead to orange peel, raspberry, and a hint of that schistous soil that influences the terroir so deeply. Bright, fresh, and lip-smackingly dry.
