M.A. Monticelli Roero Arneis 2017

This project comes from Mario and Anna Monticelli, along with an impressive winemaking résumé: from Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux to working with the legendary Philippe Melka in Napa, Anna brings all her skills to bear with this herbal, pine-scented Italian white.

The Roero region lies north of Barolo, in Piedmont; its sandy soils give aromatic heft and rounded, rich fruitiness to the wines while preserving their flinty, herbal edge. They straddle Sauvignon Blanc-style acidity with a richer element to make for a slam-dunk weeknight food or aperitif anytime-wine.

With its lemon and green apple, pine-scented glory, layered with pear, almond, and an almost salty finish, it goes well with anything. Bright, tart, tangy, and textured – it's simply a gem at a great price.

Not convinced? Jeb Dunnuck awarded this humble affordable white an astonishing 90 points, having said, "I loved the 2017 Arneis Roero and it’s a perfect house white. Racy, vibrant, yet balanced, with terrific notes of citrus pith, lime, and a kiss of minerality, it’s as juicy and delicious as they come. Drink up!"
