Lectores Vini, "La Selección" Montsant 2018
Garnacha Blend｜Montsant, Spain
How exciting is the Spanish wine scene right now? In our never ending search for authenticity and excellence, we bring you the “Lectores Vini” (“readers of the vine”) project headed by the Spanish winemaking phenom Fredi Torres. He and his partner Marc Lecha launched the project in 2016 to highlight singular sites across Spain.
Their “La Selección” 2018 red hails from a single site in Masroig, part of the Montsant region, one of Catalunya’s most highly regarded. The Montsant appellation encircles Priorat, and its wines share many characteristics with its neighbor. Garnacha, Cariñena and Tempranillo comprise the blend for a classic snapshot of Spain’s finest indigenous varietals.
Fermented in stainless steel and aged six months before bottling, it retains all the freshness and personality of the region yet still shows a lively, fruit-driven personality undergirded by a chewy minerality reminiscent of the red clay soils predominant in the village of Masroig from when it comes. Organic, soulful, and solidly medium-bodied, this is an “everyday driver” to put in regular rotation in your cellar.
A brilliant ruby-crimson in the glass, red flowers and juicy plum fruits leap forth. A bright, crystal clear core of red and blue fruits hold the middle, accented with a touch of earthy spice, perfume, and a broad finish both suave and satisfyingly rich, without being cloying or too weighty.
Robert Parker agrees, with his 90-point review:
"A fruit-driven red with bright cherry aromas and notes of violets, quite perfumed, expressive and attractive. The palate is quite light…and the tannins are very fine. It's clean and long, very tasty."
These hills are not fertile, easily-farmed fields. The soil is rocky, the climate capricious, the altitude extreme; all of which makes for amazing terroir through hard work, and Fredi Torres knocks it out of the park. Enjoy!
