Leah Jørgensen Cellars Cabernet Franc 2019

Southern Oregon

From Leah Jørgensen, the master of Loire Valley-style wines in Oregon, one of our favorite winemakers in the Pacific Northwest. Leah is a modern-day renaissance woman; in addition to making killer wines she’s studied literature, anthropology, chemistry, and holistic nutrition. She takes a nutritionist’s approach to winemaking, looking at how yeast interact with fermenting juice, seeking balance in the winery (and all-natural, chemical-free processes, of course).

Her 2019 Cab Franc début, hailing from two organic sites in southern Oregon, is precisely the type of wine I would buy in 5-case increments to pour by-the-glass during my days as a wine director. It's fresh, forward, crazily food-friendly, and even better the second day open.

Oozing blue fruits and exotic flowers, her 2019 evokes the best of Loire-valley Cab Francs with sweet plum, violets, peppercorn, oolong tea, graphite, and smoke with a polished, espresso-laced and fleshy finish held together with suave tannins and a lip-smacking, dark-fruited finish.

Fun fact: Cabernet Franc is one of the parent grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon; if you've never had a 100% Cab Franc, let this be your introductory grape to its prowess and refinement. If you're already familiar, this is one the finest and needs no introduction!

Those two vineyard sources are the "Crater View" and "Sundown" vineyards in Oregon's southern reaches. Southern Oregon is one of the most exciting places in the country to find natural, organic, or biodynamic wines. The fact that they’re not as well-known as, say, the Willamette Valley has left room for these producers to experiment with other varieties and to champion biodynamic and organic farming. It's a hotbed of diverse, innovative winemakers unafraid to push the envelope – all at great value.

Leah Jørgensen Cellars launched the winery in 2011 and has since become the go-to for fantastic natural wine from the Pacific Northwest. She's the brave new face of natural Oregon wine and this one is killer – don’t miss out!
