Lagier Meredith Tribidrag 2017
Tribidrag (Zinfandel)｜Mount Veeder, Napa Valley
The 2016 sold out in record time – grab some 2017 now, arriving next week!
Read on for an absolutely intriguing short history of the estate and of Zinfandel's lineage in California!
First off, Tribidrag is the Croatian name for the grape we know as Zinfandel. Why call it Tribidrag, however, when Zinfandel is so more well-known, and not insignificant, easier to sell?!
Because we owe it to the founders of the estate for this groundbreaking work. In 2001, Dr. Carole Meredith and a group of Croatian researchers discovered what might be the last nine vines of what’s considered the original Zinfandel rootstock, also called Crljenak Kaštelanski – wine’s equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Their four years of painstaking research shows definitively that Zinfandel’s origins stem from the Dalmatian coast, going back to at least the 14th century. Zin has been “in” for over 600 years!
Fast forward to the present day, Dr. Meredith and her partner Steve Lagier own a property on Mount Veeder, part of Napa’s Mayacamas range, sitting at over 1300 feet elevations, where they craft rugged expressions of Napa mountain fruit, not least among them this heady Tribidrag, or Zinfandel.
Not only is Dr. Meredith an accomplished professor of viticulture with over two decades experience working in the vineyard and a damn fine steward of the property, Steve Lagier spent 14 years making wine at Mondavi before striking out on his own. This 2016 vintage was Steve’s 36th consecutive vintage in Napa.
The wine is a full-throated expression of mountainous Zinfandel: black olive, bing cherry, ripe raspberries, anise-scented licorice, clove, aromatic lavender, and dark chocolate. Unabashedly plush, but incredibly balanced. Don’t believe us? Dial up any list of accolades across their entire line and you’ll see scores ranging from 90-95 points (or more).
The wines are very much influenced by the Old World. Dry farming, natural fermentations, very little to no new oak; in their own words, they "continue to use the barrels until they begin to fall apart."
In the respected words of Antonio Galloni, their Tribidgrag is "bursting at the seams with character and pedigree." Truly, this is one of Napa’s most influential winemaking couples and significant mountain estates.
