Kiona Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Cabernet Sauvignon|Red Mountain, WA

How much does marketing cost? A fair question with a difficult answer. A bit more easily answered, however, when contemplating this fantastic Cabernet from one of the finest practitioners of the varietal in the entire Pacific Northwest.

The Red Mountain region of Washington state is a high quality region part of the larger Columbia Valley. Funny enough, Red Mountain is neither red nor a mountain, but more of a slope bordering the Columbia river. At such a northerly latitude, Red Mountain receives on average two hours more sunshine per day than Napa. This, coupled with the generally cooler and longer days means the grapes receive a slower, more drawn out ripening period.

The Kiona estate was discovered and planted far before any government agency or bandwagon had caught on. The year was 1972 when John Williams and Jim Holmes, two friends and co-workers, bought the plot of land. Three years later they planted Cab, Riesling, and Chardonnay and began the journey to the historic winery of today.

Kiona's estate Cabernet is more than meets the eye: coming in at 96% Cab Sauv, 3% Merlot, and 1% Malbec this is a classic "Left Bank" style Bordeaux blend and has all the concurrent finesse, grace, and polish one expects. With an array of blue-black fruit, cedar, smoked meat, peppercorn, and lifted red spice, Kiona's Cabernet holds its own against Napa any day!

The critics agree: Wine & Spirits gave this edition 91 points.

And when a bottle of Napa Cab easily costs $50-$100 or more these days, this sub-$30 Cab is a sure thing and an easy addition to your weeknight arsenal. Cheers!
