Josep Grau "Vespres" Montsant 2016
Carignan Blend｜Montsant, Catalunya
Vinous Media 91 points
In our persistent search for the finest organic & natural wine, we inevitably look to Spain and its bevy of small, innovative farmer-winemakers on the forefront of natural winemaking.
Josep Grau, in Montsant, is just such a winemaker, crafting natural wines without sacrificing sense of place or authenticity. His "Vespres" bottling is 70% Carignan, known locally as "Samsó," and 30% Garnacha, made from old vines (vinyes velles) in the high-altitude region of Montsant. 100% organic, with zero use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial yeasts. He ferments in a blend of cement tank and large, old barrel, letting the fruit and terroir shine through. Only 13.7% abv – an incredible feat for how concentrated this wine is.
The Montsant region encircles the well-known powerhouse Priorat appellation in Catalunya, both marked by high altitudes, unique terroir, and plush, extracted styles of red made from Garnacha and Samsó, among others.
We'll let the critics describe the wine:
"Succulent herbs and smoky minerals with air...offering concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry flavors and a bracing, spicy jolt of white pepper. Finishes silky and gently sweet, with harmonious tannins and excellent, mineral-driven persistence."
Stock your pantry on this versatile, satisfying red while you can; we have but a few cases to sell!
