Javi Revert "Sensal" Tinto 2017
Monastrell Blend｜Valencia, Spain
Prepare yourself for one of the most unique, intense reds you'll likely come across this year. This incredible creation comes from Javier Revert, a winemaker you should absolutely have on your radar.
The blend is a mélange of indigenous grapes Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre), Bonicaire, Arcos, Garnacha. I'll wager you've never had a blend of such grapes before! Bonicaire and Arcos are two local varietals native to this eastern portion of Spain known as the Levant. Like Noah with his ark, Javier Revert has made it his mission to steward and champion these long-forgotten, nearly extinct varietals. The "Sensal" vineyard is very dear to him – his great-grandfather planted it decades ago in the rugged clay-limestone soils at over 2000 feet elevations in Valencia, eastern Spain.
The wine hits on all cylinders from the beginning, and continues unfurling for hours. Over the course of four hours in a decanter it unpacked blackberry and cassis liqueur, brambly black fruits, cigar smoke, bitter cocoa, candied violets, and a meaty, mesquite-and-grilled-brisket note buoyed by natural fruit tannins and bright, pungent acidity. Every sniff brings on more nuance and flavor. Incredibly full-bodied yet balanced and not cloying, pair this with a glass of peaty scotch and your favorite cigar – it's that heady and rich.
A wine of this caliber can go toe-to-toe and glass-to-glass with any heavy-hitters you please. From top-tier Napa Cabernet, premium Bordeaux, or a fierce Italian Aglianico, this wine cements itself in the upper echelon of the most prestigious, complex, and supremely ageable wines on the planet. You simply can't do better than this price for such a robust, satisfying Spanish red. Simply incredible.
