Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara
Found in the Happy Canyon subdistrict of Santa Barbara, Grimm's Bluff is a leader in honest, responsibly-made, award-winning wines, farmed biodynamically since their inception.
As the name implies, the vineyards sit at almost 900 feet elevation, perched on a bluff overlooking the Santa Ynez river. Fierce winds driven down the river provide ideal swings in temperature from hot, sunny days into cool nights. This is an ideal microclimate to nurture biodynamic farming – a school of thought which takes into account organic farming principles set to the lunar cycle. Biodynamic agriculture looks at entire systems: which birds eat which pests; the plant life around a vineyard that supports diverse and beneficial ecology; and naturally-derived treatments such as herbal "teas" which obviate the need for man-made chemicals.
This elegant 100% Cabernet Sauvignon has notes of blackberry, tobacco, cedar-laced incense, unroasted coffee bean, and cassis jam. Unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon and utterly delightful. Still tightly wound, from the amazing 2016 vintage, it shows its true nature after a couple hours in a decanter. No doubt it will only get better with a few more years time in bottle.
Happy Canyon is a cooler, niche site known for Bordeaux varieties. Framed by mountains and the Santa Ynez river, perched among the cliffs, it's an idyllic, best-kept-secret wine paradise and absolutely worth a visit to see their natural farming practices firsthand.
At $48 this Cabernet goes toe-to-toe with its Napa brethren at twice the price!
