Geyerhof, "Ried Rosensteig" Grüner Veltliner 2019

Grüner Veltliner|Kremstal, Austria

Austria's signature grape variety, the noble Grüner Veltliner has long been an integral part of every sommelier’s playbook; the grape’s alchemical qualities meld extract, minerality, and unmatchable sense of place.

Along the southern banks of the Danube river in the village of Oberfucha, the Maier family has lived here, farmed, and made wine since the 1500s. In the 17th century, Maria Theresia, the Archduchess of Austria, authorized shipment of wine from this area up and down the Danube – Geyer was the owner at the time, whose name and nautical theme continue to grace the label today. Today Ilse Maier and her son Josef continue to farm these certified organic vines in the vineyard (“Ried”) of Rosensteig, sitting above the Danube banks, surrounded by forest and the even-more ancient Stift Göttweig abbey on the hillside above.

The wine is a labor of love from start to finish: organic farming, natural fertilizers, hand harvesting throughout. Stainless steel fermentation leads to a bright, expressive interpretation of single-vineyard Grüner. Meyer lemon, white blossoms, savory green herbs, and wet stone commingl for a brisk, bright finish accented by white peach and wet rocks. The finish is all lime peel, lemon blossoms, and apricot-peach stoniness. Minimalist, uber-clean practices in the vineyard and cellar bring out the best of this site and grape. We love it!

Balancing bracing acidity and minerality with lushness and texture, this single-vineyard Grüner is an outstanding value, and with free nationwide shipping on six bottles, it’s a no-brainer procurement for affordable, delicious sipping year-round!
