Frédéric Magnien Bourgogne Blanc 2018
Who loves organic/biodynamic white Burgundy?! This beautiful, allocated and rare Bourgogne Blanc comes from Frédéric Magnien, one of our favorite maisons in the game.
Five generations of the Magnien family have been producing classic Burgundy. Frédéric is the newest generation to do it, having returned to Burgundy after stints in Australia and California, where he worked with Josh Jensen at his famed Calera winery.
This 2018 Bourgogne Blanc hails from pristine, select plots, including the single-vineyard "Les Graviers" plot of Chambolle-Musigny and from Meursault – and the pedigree shines through. Golden in color and as floral and crisp as a brisk autumn evening, the wine oozes pear and flowers, with that textbook mineral oil suaveness from Meursault, hints of juicy yellow pear, and a mouth-filling sumptuousness.
In the vineyards, the farming is all organic and biodynamic, according to the lunar cycle; some certified, others simply farming naturally as they have been for centuries. In the winery, Freddy makes the wines in a very "postmodern" fashion, using a combination of neutral barrel and terra cotta clay jars – no flashy new oak or commercial yeasts in sight!
Magnien's wines are majestic creations, living proof that all "natural" wine doesn't need to be acerbic, cloudy, or vinegary to be a true and honest expression of the land.
