Fattoria Dezi "Dezio" Rosso 2014
Lovers of bold volcanic Italian reds take note!
Let's talk Montepulciano, the native grape of the Marche and Abruzzo, on the Adriatic side of Italy; the best come from the volcanic soils so prevalent in this region, producing bold, deeply-flavored reds capable of incredible complexity and long aging.
Situated on the slopes of Monte Vettore, one of the highest peaks in the region, lies Fattoria Dezi. Their "Dezio" bottling of Montepulciano includes fruit from the oldest vineyards on the estate, planted in 1953. This unique, special family estate blends technology with natural, postmodern know-how: they use solar and geothermic power and natural treatments in the vineyard and winery, fermenting the wines in cement tank and aging in indigenous oak barrels with no fining or filtration.
Their 2014 "Dezio" is immensely satisfying, with blackberry liqueur, cigar, bacon, smoky minerals, and perfumed red flowers wrapped around a deep, brooding volcanic core. There are no tricks employed here – this is is simply a natural expression of the local Montepulciano grape and its volcanic ancient soils, full of life and character.
