Fabio Oberto Langhe Nebbiolo 2017
As any regular reader of our daily offers can confirm, we are devotees of family-run wineries and farms making good, honest wine the old-fashioned way. As "natural" wine continues to get co-opted by big corporate firms and land bought up by multinational publicly-traded companies, honoring individual winemakers is more urgent than ever. In the Langhe, at the foot of the Italian Alps in Piedmont, family estates like Oberto still outnumber corporate ones but someday this will not be true.
The noble Nebbiolo reigns supreme here, and Fabio Oberto's is a pristine example of the village of La Morra, known for its elegant, delicate "Pinot-like" characteristics. Close your eyes and revel in the Morello cherry, blood orange, dusty cocoa, and rosewater aromatics. The core of acidity is lip-smacking and fresh; the earthy tannins are rounded and smooth. Fruit for this cuvée are the younger vines from the very same vineyards that go into their Barolo, which trade for $60+ in the open market.
Raised in La Morra, the son of the esteemed Andrea Oberto, Fabio continues his family's tradition of Piedmontese excellence. Stock up on a few bottles of this lovely, aromatic classic – at this price you can afford to enjoy it any night of the week.
