Fabien Trosset "1952" Mondeuse 2016
With summer at our doorstep we turn to wines from cooler, high-altitude regions like this Savoie red by the Trosset family. Fabien and his partner Chloé are multi-generational farmers specializing in Savoie's iconic red grape, Mondeuse.
This is their top cuvée, from old vines planted in 1952 (hence the name). Aged for twelve months in traditional large, old demi-muid barrels, it exhibits all the alpine Mondeuse character one hopes for: loads of blue fruits, purple flowers, toasted anise, and white pepper. The limestone, alpine terroir is immediately evident on the palate, with a bracing blueberries, lilacs, and a musky-sandalwood finish.
Cool, refreshing, and complex; this wine belongs with charcuterie, duck confit, seared salmon, or grilled summer squash. Devotees of fine Burgundy will instantly appreciate the complex, woodsy aromatics here, backed up intense lift provided by its alpine provenance.
