Domaine Zafeirakis "Microcosmos" 2019
Greece's answer to flinty, smoky, mineral-intense Sancerre!
Honeysuckle, beeswax, zesty salted lemon, and rip-roaring acidity await you in this vibrant Greek white from Tyrnavos, on the Greek mainland at the foot of Mt. Olympus (seriously). Not for the faint of heart! If you like your minerally, grippy Sauvignon Blanc, then you'll LOVE this unique, refreshing natural Greek white.
The soils here are flint: yep – the same type which you'll find in Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé, so named for the "smoked" flavor these soils impart. The grape here is the famed Malagousia, one of Greece's, if not the world's, finest varietals, making full flavored and aromatically intense whites, brimming with minerality, fruit texture, and that textbook bracing acidity. If you've never had one, we highly suggest giving this one a whirl. And if you know this grape then you know, and this is one of the best we've had in a long while.
Fourth-generation Christos Zafeirakis earned a Master's in winemaking in Milan and apprenticed all over Europe before coming home to his family estate. And boy did he learn how to make some fine naturally-fermented organic wine here. This bracing white is so full of life and character; the love he puts into it is evident from the first sip until the last. You'll be hard pressed to find a better or higher quality wine for the price!
