Domaine Rougeot Meursault "Sous la Velle" 2017
The fifth-generation Domaine Rougeot is one of Meursault's best-kept secrets. Pierre-Henri Rougeot is the latest generation to employ centuries-old technique to this fantastic bottling: zero sulfur, organic farming, and completely natural processes, rendering a wine exploding with life and classic Meursault richness.
There's no denying Meursault is a white-hot appellation in Burgundy. There's simply no more land left to plant in this region and its already-finite wines get snatched up by collectors and speculators worldwide. For these reasons and more, we were shocked to get a sizable allocation of this beautiful wine from an under-the-radar producer who's been quietly producing some of the finest Meursault we've come across, for a staggering low price of $55. Compare this to the $150/bottle (or more) you'll pay from other top estates and it further cements its place in the upper echelon of quality and value. The generous, highly-lauded 2017 vintage shines through clearly here, with all of the lanolin and mineral depth one looks for in Meursault, with a long, spectacularly stony finish that caresses your palate, begging for more.
Pierre-Henri Rougeot is the latest in a succession of Rougeots to farm 13 hectares of organic, low-intervention vines in Meursault. His Sous la Velle plot, meaning "under the village," is a micro-vineyard directly at the base of the Meursault hill. He is certainly what one would consider a "natural" winemaker: everything is farmed 100% organically, the wines are fermented from native yeast in his heirloom oak casks and bottled completely unfined and unfiltered.
This is a classic, through-and-through, guaranteed to be an immensely satisfying addition to your cellar to drink now or hold for another 5-7 years. Incredible.
