Domaine Marc Colin Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "Les Castets" 2017
Glorious, small-production white Burgundy. A moving experience. Supple at the first pull of the cork but incredibly ageworthy. A must for any serious collector's cellar.
To put it quickly and simply, we get a tiny allocation of this wine each vintage. The 2017, as critic Antonio Galloni puts it, is a "modern classic," one whose yields are thankfully a bit more generous. That said, there's not much to go around!
Domaine Marc Colin is a Saint-Aubin specialist – they make no fewer than ten different cuvées of Saint-Aubin. Among our favorites is this "Les Castets," a tiny vineyard found a steep slope and one of the harder-to-find cuvées in Saint Aubin.
Marc Colin’s first son, Pierre-Yves, inherited some of the vineyards and went on to found the epic, highly allocated domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey with his wife Caroline, a domaine whose wines are also some of the most sought-after on the Burgundy market, for which you'll easily pay twice this price. Yep – this is the original founding domaine.
And of course, the domaine is farmed organically, totally naturally, including spontaneous fermentations and horse-plowed vineyards.
