Domaine de la Roncière "Cuvée Tradition" Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016
Founded in 1959, the year Charles de Gaulle was inaugurated as president, Domaine de la Roncière has been a family operation ever since, crafting supremely traditional, full expressions of the Rhône valley for three generations.
The terroir here is what's called "galets du Pape" – rounded river stones which soak up the heat during the day and reflect it back at night, partially responsible for the depth and richness of the wines. Roncière has loads of this terroir in their tiny 11 hectares of vineyards – this "Tradition" bottling has all the notes one looks for in this style: black olive, licorice, leather, game, sweet spice and oak, with a plush, creamy finish.
Year in, year out, Roncière is a master of the Rhône and their prowess really shines through in this blockbuster 2016 vintage.
This wine is not shy! Pair it with long-braised lamb shank or bavette steak quickly grilled with lemon-garlic persillade.
Collectors and neophytes take notice – this is a cuvée to enjoy immediately AND tuck away for another decade at least. But please, if you drink this now, decant for at least a couple hours to let the layers of flavor unwind. You won't be disappointed. Cheers!
