Domaine Jousset "Premier Rendez-vous" Montlouis 2017
Chenin Blanc｜Loire Valley
What a difference a year makes!
It's one thing to speculate about a wine's longevity, and another thing altogether to witness a wine stand the test of time. We've been blessed with another shipment and it's been a year – nearly to the day – since we offered Jousset's spectacular Montlouis – it's even better a year later, if you can believe it. Read on:
Found just across the river from the famed Vouvray, Montlouis is an under-appreciated source of high-quality Chenin Blanc in a range of styles. Wife-and-husband team Lise and Bertrand Jousset's "Premier Rendez-vous" cuvée is wonderfully contoured, complex, gorgeously supple – yet dry.
Along with her husband Bertrand, Lise Jousset farms her biodynamic plots of Chenin Blanc completely naturally, absent of any chemical or artificial substances, using minimal sulfur, and harvesting completely by hand.
This wine embodies the best of Loire-valley Chenin: it just explodes with crushed white flowers, lemon blossoms, Bosc pear, lanolin, fresh hay, zesty kumquat and nectarine. Its bottle age has rendered a wonderful beeswax, honeyed-almond characteristic. It smells as if it would be sweet, but no! Take note of its incredibly dry, saline finish that refreshes the palate and begs for another sip. Go ahead and pair it with baked brie, curries, Thai food, cheesy casserole, salt cod brandade, harissa-rubbed pork loin...there's almost nothing this wine won't go with!
As they put it, "Wine is meant to be shared and consumed. It is up to us, as vignerons, to craft a wine for every occasion." Thank you Lise and Bertrand!
Loire valley Chenin Blanc is favorite of connoisseurs for good reason; its combination of ripe, full-flavored fruit and bright, mineral-driven acidity make immensely satisfying, food-friendly wines with richness and balance. Jousset's is all that and more: fresh, dry-finishing Chenin Blanc with polish and precision.
