Domaine Orenga de Gaffory Patrimonio 2013
Bright, juicy island red from the Patrimonio region in Corsica. This is for fans of Chianti or cool-climate Pinot Noir lovers. The wine is juicy, fresh, aromatic, and bright. It goes down all too easily and is lovely with red sauce cuisine.
When Corsican culture is mentioned, the first thing that may come to mind is their history of organized crime and social dissent. In fact, wine growing has a long and storied history on this fierce, rugged island. Because of their strong national pride and typical throngs of Mediterranean tourists, very little of their wine gets exported (until now). Domaine de Gaffory farms totally certified biologique organic – no chemicals or bad stuff anywhere.
The soils here are of the same geologic origin as those found on mainland France and Italy: chalky clay and limestone, riddled with ancient fossils lending the wine aromatic finesse and pungent acidity.
Nielluccio is the Corsican synonym for Sangiovese, and indeed it has all the hallmarks of the variety: bright red floral aromas abound, with cherry hard candy, cocoa nib, and musky sandalwood-rhubarb notes. The finish is bright and light, perfectly in balance with natural grape tannins.
If you love aged Tuscan Sangiovese like Chianti Reserva, this is the wine for you. It has complexity, candied red fruit flavors and bright acidity that match up heavenly with pasta pomodoro, eggplant parmesan, or herby chicken sausage with polenta and tomatoes.
