Domaine de Cébène "Felgaria" 2012
Mourvèdre｜Faugères, Southern France
"One of my favorite producers in Faugères." – The Wine Advocate
This lovely domaine is run by the inimitable Brigitte Chevalier, located on the French Riviera in Faugères, just west of Provence. She farms a scant 11 hectares of 90+ year-old organic vines nestled high in the hills, crafting world-class reds from the unique schist soils.
Of the four wines she produces, we find her "Felgaria" the richest and headiest of the line-up, and the only based upon the deeply structured Mourvèdre grape. From the Rhône to Napa, back to the Spanish riviera, Mourvèdre is a benchmark Mediterranean variety, needing lots of sunshine and a deft hand in the winery. It produces serious, plush reds with loads of natural antioxidants in the skins, rendering it capable of aging gracefully for decades.
This wine is just so satisfying: blackberry liqueur, plum, dried rosemary, black olive and saddle leather. A full, creamy finish with natural fruit tannins and a kiss of oak hint at a long life, but at eight years of age drinks incredibly well now.
If you need more evidence, pick from any of the top reviewers and you'll find a bevy of scores in the upper 90s...
Rich, robust, ready to drink. Cheers!
