Dandelion Vineyards "Red Queen of the Eden Valley" Shiraz 2015

Eden Valley, Barossa, Australia

Elena Brooks is the mind behind Dandelion Vineyards, working with premier old-vine vineyards from South Australia. From the Eden Valley to the McLaren Vale and Barossa, she makes pure, highly expressive wines that range from apéritif-fresh Roussanne to heady, concentrated Shiraz and everything in between. Originally from Bulgaria, she worked across Europe before founding Dandelion Vineyards, staying true to her motto "the truth is in the vineyard and the proof is in the bottle.”

And the proof is indeed here – with intense boysenberry confit, black plum, blackberry liqueur, jasmine, and a whole spice cabinet of clove, cardamom, pepper, ginger, and sandalwood, it's a polished, pure, full-bodied Shiraz of the highest order. The fruit is tightly wound, superbly polished, and expansive  as it opens up with time in the glass or decanter. The palate is classic Barossa Shiraz through-and-through, with silky tannins and a lingering floral, wood-smoked finish. We savored this beauty for a full thirty-six hours after opening!

The Eden Valley is arguably the highest quality subzone in the Barossa – the 2015 marks the fourth vintage of this "Red Queen," so named for the vineyard of ancient-vine Shiraz, AKA Syrah, planted in 1912 as the source for this cuvée.

After hand harvesting she pressed the fruit into French oak barrels for a natural fermentation in barrel, allowing the wine to age for another two and half years in those same barrels, for a total maturation of thirty six months. Bottled unfiltered.

Elena Brooks is simply an amazing winemaker. Everything she does is a show-stopper – from crisp, logic-defyingly balanced whites wines to this full-boded yet subtle Shiraz, she has shown an absolute mastery of Australian wine excellence.
