COS "Pithos" Rosso 2018
Frappato/Nero d'Avola | Sicily
When our (tiny) allocation of COS came in I couldn't wait to get it out. One of the most distinctive and outright delicious Italian wines out there, a benchmark Sicilian collectible that will age easily for a decade or more. I've had their wines going back to the '90s and they go for the long haul.
COS is an acronym of the three owners of the winery: Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Pinuccia Strano, who founded the estate in Vittoria, southeast Sicily in 1980. Imagine Sicily in the '80s – remote, impoverished, and under mostly mafia rule. It was in this environment they started COS with just a few parcels and shoestring budget. Now, it's one of the most sought-after and collectible Sicilian reds out there.
This "Pithos" Rosso di Vittoria is a blend of Frappato and Nero d'Avola. Frappato is a rare bird indeed – it's grown almost exclusively in Sicily, where along with the lovely Nero d'Avola, it makes up the traditional Vittoria blend. Brimming with rose hips, red berry fruit, and exotic Frankincense spice. Elegant tannins, perfectly fruited, and perfumed aromatics like no other. It's a gorgeous and refined drinking experience through-and-through.
The wines are fermented entirely in terra cotta amphora buried in the ground, an ancient practice whose origins go back 8000 years (seriously, Google it). No chemicals, commercial yeasts or artificial anything touch the soil, the vines, or the wines. Photos don't do justice to the awe-inspiring level of care these wines receive. An absolutely insane value at $32/bottle for a historic, world-class Italian gem.
We get but one shot at the wines of COS every year and we jump on the little amount they let us have – we recommend you do the same! Free shipping on six bottles, max six bottles per person.
