Clos des Galevesses, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2016
Merlot-Cabernet Franc｜Bordeaux, France
If fantastic, family-run Bordeaux at a reasonable price is what you crave, look no further than this savory, complex, utterly delicious Bordeaux from classic terroir on the right bank of Bordeaux.
Found just north of the charming town of Libourne, Lalande-de-Pomerol is the “little brother” appellation to nearby Pomerol, on the same elevated plateau, with identical terroir. Here you'll find Clos des Galevesses, near the 12th century church Eglise Saint Jean-Baptiste church. The estate boasts classic clay soils and higher proportions of polished gravel soils; Merlot takes to clay and the Cabernet Franc to the stonier soil. The result is a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Decant this gem for an hour to discover aromas of cedar, black cherry, bay leaf, and plum with a savory note of underbrush. The palate continues with crunchy mulberry red fruit, warm spices, peppercorn, and a beguiling subtle leathery note complemented by mushroom, warm earth, and smooth, rounded tannins. Every sip of this beautiful wine exudes class and polish. Unmistakable right-bank Bordeaux at its best.
This is a pitch-perfect rendition of the fabulous 2016 vintage, whose high quality is overshadowed by the fanfare of the preceding 2015 vintage. Make no mistake: 2016 is just as classic, but at a better value! If you love right-bank Bordeaux but hate paying three figures for it, revel in this affordable gem now, over the holidays, and over the next half-decade as it continues to mature in bottle.
It may come as no surprise that much of Bordeaux is controlled by private equity, foreign firms, and multinational corporations. It’s all the more special, then, to come across a family-owned, honest estate making old-school claret from prime terroir. Free shipping on six of these or any other bottles site-wide. Santé!
